Origins and Spread of the Black Death
The Black Death did not emerge from nowhere. It was the product of specific ecological, commercial, and geopolitical conditions that converged in the middle decades of the fourteenth century. Understanding how a bacterium circulating among wild rodents in the high plateaus of Central Asia became the deadliest pandemic in European history requires tracing a chain of transmission that stretched across half the known world, carried by merchants, soldiers, sailors, and the fleas that travelled with them.
The Ecological Reservoir
The bacterium Yersinia pestis exists in nature as a parasite of wild rodents. Its primary reservoirs are the burrowing mammals of the Central Asian steppe — marmots, gerbils, and ground squirrels — where it circulates in an enzootic cycle, maintained at low levels within rodent populations by flea vectors. Periodically, conditions favour epizootic outbreaks: population surges among the host rodents, climatic shifts that alter flea reproduction rates, or ecological disruptions that bring infected animals into contact with human settlements.
Recent research, including DNA analysis of ancient plague genomes, has identified the Tian Shan mountains on the border of modern Kyrgyzstan as the likely source of the specific Y. pestis strain that caused the Black Death. A 2022 study of burials at the Kara-Djigach and Burana cemeteries near Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan found that a spike in deaths in 1338–1339 — inscriptions on tombstones attributed the deaths to “pestilence” — coincided with the presence of the ancestral Black Death strain. This places the pandemic’s emergence in a region where the bacterium’s natural reservoir was well established and where human populations lived in close proximity to rodent hosts.
From the Steppe to the World
The fourteenth-century steppe was not an isolated wilderness. It was traversed by the trade routes of the Mongol Empire, which by the 1330s had created the most extensive network of overland communication the world had yet seen. The Pax Mongolica — the relative peace imposed by Mongol rule across Eurasia — facilitated the movement of goods, people, and, inevitably, disease across thousands of miles. Caravans carrying silk, spices, furs, and precious metals moved between China, Central Asia, Persia, and the Black Sea ports, following routes that had been used for centuries but were now more heavily trafficked and better protected than at any time since antiquity.
The spread of plague through Asia in the 1330s and early 1340s is poorly documented in surviving sources, but its effects can be inferred from the sudden disruption of trade, the abandonment of settlements, and scattered references in Chinese, Persian, and Central Asian chronicles to devastating epidemics. By the mid-1340s, the disease had reached the western edges of the Mongol domains — the cities of the Golden Horde along the lower Volga and the shores of the Black Sea.
The Siege of Caffa and the Mediterranean Crossing
The most dramatic episode in the plague’s westward journey was the siege of Caffa (modern Feodosia) on the Crimean peninsula in 1346. The Genoese maintained a thriving trading colony at Caffa, which served as a key node in the maritime trade network connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The Mongol army of Jani Beg, Khan of the Golden Horde, besieged the city, but plague broke out among the besieging forces. According to the Italian chronicler Gabriele de’ Mussi, the Mongols catapulted the bodies of their plague dead over the walls of Caffa in an attempt to infect the defenders — an episode sometimes cited as one of the earliest instances of biological warfare, though the reliability of de’ Mussi’s account remains debated.
Whether or not the catapult story is accurate, the outcome is clear: Genoese ships fleeing Caffa carried the plague westward. The disease reached Constantinople — then the capital of the diminished Byzantine Empire — in the spring or summer of 1347, and from there it spread rapidly through the maritime networks of the Mediterranean.
The European Catastrophe
The arrival of the plague in Europe in October 1347, when infected Genoese ships docked at Messina in Sicily, marked the beginning of a pandemic that would engulf the continent within three years. The speed of the disease’s progress was a function of the dense commercial networks that linked European cities and towns. From Sicily, the plague moved through Italy with devastating effect, striking Florence, Venice, Siena, Pisa, and Genoa in rapid succession.
From Italian ports, the disease spread to France, reaching Marseille by the end of 1347 and Paris by the summer of 1348. It crossed the Channel to England in the summer of 1348, arriving at the Dorset port of Melcombe Regis (modern Weymouth). By the end of 1349, it had reached every corner of the British Isles, including the remote communities of the Scottish Highlands.
Central Europe was struck in 1349, as the disease moved through the Rhineland, Bavaria, Bohemia, and Poland. Scandinavia suffered in 1349–1350, with Norway particularly hard hit after a ship carrying plague arrived at Bergen. The Iberian Peninsula experienced the epidemic from 1348 onward, and Eastern Europe and Russia were affected in the early 1350s.
The Middle Eastern Dimension
The Black Death was not solely a European catastrophe. The plague in the Middle East was equally devastating. Egypt, Syria, Palestine, and the Arabian Peninsula all suffered massive mortality. Cairo, one of the largest cities in the world at the time, may have lost a third of its population. The Mamluk Sultanate, the dominant political power in the region, was weakened by the loss of soldiers, administrators, and tax revenue. The Islamic scholars Ibn al-Khatib and Ibn Khaldun produced some of the most sophisticated contemporary analyses of the pandemic.
Precursors and Parallels
The Black Death was not the first plague pandemic. The Plague of Justinian, which struck the Byzantine Empire and the Mediterranean world in the sixth century, was caused by an earlier strain of the same bacterium. Comparing the two pandemics illuminates both the continuities and the differences in how plague interacted with human societies across the centuries.
Tracking the Pandemic
Understanding the spread of the Black Death requires drawing on diverse evidence: chronicles and letters that record the disease’s arrival and progress in specific locations; administrative records that document mortality through burial registers, wills, and tax rolls; and modern archaeological investigations that reveal the physical traces of mass death.
