Maritime Trade and Plague Transmission

Ships were the most efficient vehicles for transmitting the Black Death across long distances. The maritime networks of the medieval Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Baltic, and the North Sea connected ports and cities across thousands of miles, and the vessels that carried goods, passengers, and crews also carried infected rats, fleas, and humans. The pandemic’s extraordinary speed — from Messina to Norway in approximately two years — was a direct function of the density and reach of medieval shipping.

Medieval Shipping and the Plague

The ships of the fourteenth century varied enormously in size, design, and function. The Mediterranean was dominated by two types: the galley, a long, narrow vessel propelled primarily by oars and used for warfare and high-value trade; and the round ship (navis or coca), a broader, deeper vessel propelled by sail and used for bulk cargo. Northern European waters saw the cog, a sturdy, single-masted vessel that was the workhorse of the Hanseatic League, and various smaller coastal craft.

All of these vessels shared characteristics that made them ideal vehicles for plague transmission. Their holds were dark, warm, and humid — conditions that favoured rat and flea survival. They carried provisions — grain, dried meat, cheese, wine — that attracted rodents. Their crews lived in cramped, unsanitary conditions that facilitated the spread of disease. And they moved between ports at speeds that far exceeded overland travel, carrying infection across distances that would have taken weeks or months by land.

A typical Mediterranean merchant galley carried a crew of 150 to 200 men (including oarsmen) and could transport 100 to 150 tons of cargo. A round ship might carry 200 to 500 tons with a crew of twenty to fifty. The Hanseatic cog was smaller, typically carrying 100 to 200 tons with a crew of ten to twenty. These vessels were numerous: hundreds of ships plied the Mediterranean at any given time, and the Hanseatic fleet numbered in the thousands.

The Black Sea Corridor

The Black Sea was the critical junction between the overland trade routes of Central Asia and the maritime networks of the Mediterranean. The Genoese and Venetian colonies on the Crimean coast — Caffa (Feodosia), Soldaia (Sudak), and Tana (Azov) — were the western termini of the Silk Road, where goods from China, India, and Central Asia were loaded onto ships for transport to Constantinople and beyond.

The siege of Caffa in 1346 was the pivotal episode in the plague’s transition from the Asian steppe to the European maritime world. When Genoese ships fled the besieged and plague-stricken city, they carried the disease across the Black Sea to Constantinople, and from there into the Mediterranean. The exact chronology is uncertain, but by the spring of 1347, plague was active in Constantinople, and from there it spread rapidly to the ports of the Aegean, the eastern Mediterranean, and eventually the western Mediterranean.

The Genoese role in the plague’s transmission has been noted by historians since the fourteenth century. The Genoese maritime empire, which stretched from the Black Sea to the Atlantic, with colonies and trading posts in Chios, Lesbos, Pera (across the Golden Horn from Constantinople), Corsica, and Sardinia, provided a network of connections that facilitated the disease’s rapid spread. Genoese ships carried plague from Caffa to Constantinople, from Constantinople to Sicily, and from Sicily to the ports of Italy, France, and Spain.

The Mediterranean Network

The Mediterranean in the mid-fourteenth century was the most intensively navigated body of water in the world. Its shores were lined with cities and ports — Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Barcelona, Marseille, Alexandria, Constantinople, Tunis — that were connected by regular shipping routes. The volume of maritime traffic was substantial: hundreds of ships crossed the Mediterranean each year, carrying grain, wine, oil, wool, silk, spices, timber, metals, and slaves.

This dense network of connections meant that plague, once introduced into the Mediterranean, spread with extraordinary speed. From the initial focus in Sicily and the Italian ports, the disease radiated outward along every major shipping route. Ships arriving from infected ports carried the disease to new destinations, where it established fresh foci from which it spread inland along rivers and overland trade routes.

The seasonal patterns of Mediterranean navigation influenced the timing of the plague’s spread. The Mediterranean sailing season traditionally ran from April to October, when weather conditions were favourable. During the winter months, shipping was reduced, and the spread of plague by sea slowed correspondingly. However, the disease continued to spread overland during the winter, and when the sailing season resumed in the spring, ships carried it to new ports that had escaped the previous year’s epidemic.

The Atlantic Coast and the Channel

The plague’s spread from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coast of Europe followed the maritime routes that connected the ports of the Iberian Peninsula, France, England, and the Low Countries. Genoese and Venetian galleys regularly sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar to the ports of Seville, Lisbon, Bruges, and London, carrying Mediterranean goods to northern European markets. These same ships carried plague to the Atlantic ports.

The English Channel was a particularly active waterway, with heavy traffic between the ports of southern England — Southampton, Bristol, London, Melcombe Regis — and the ports of northern France, Flanders, and Gascony. The arrival of the plague in England in the summer of 1348 is generally attributed to a ship arriving from Gascony, though ships from other infected ports may also have carried the disease.

The plague in the Iberian Peninsula spread along both the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. Barcelona, Valencia, and Palma were struck from the Mediterranean side, while Lisbon and the ports of the Bay of Biscay were infected from the Atlantic. The interconnection of these maritime networks ensured that no major port could escape the pandemic.

The Baltic and the Hanseatic League

The Baltic Sea was dominated by the Hanseatic League, the association of northern European trading cities that controlled commerce between Scandinavia, the Baltic states, northern Germany, and the Low Countries. The League’s major ports — Lübeck, Hamburg, Stralsund, Rostock, Danzig (Gdańsk), Riga, Reval (Tallinn) — were connected by regular shipping services that carried grain, timber, furs, wax, fish, and salt.

The plague reached the Baltic in 1350, carried by ships from the North Sea ports. Lübeck, the League’s unofficial capital, was struck in the summer of 1350, and from there the disease spread to the other Hanseatic cities. The mortality was severe: Lübeck may have lost a third of its population, and the smaller cities of the Baltic coast suffered similarly.

The Hanseatic League’s trade connections to Scandinavia were the conduit through which the plague reached Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The traditional account of the plague’s arrival in Bergen — carried by a ship from England — reflects the close commercial ties between Norway and the Hanseatic world. The disease’s spread through the Nordic countries followed the maritime routes of the North Sea and the Baltic.

Rivers and Inland Waterways

While ocean-going ships carried plague across long distances, river traffic spread it through the interior of continents. The major rivers of Europe — the Rhine, the Rhône, the Danube, the Seine, the Thames, the Po, the Volga — were vital commercial arteries, and the boats that navigated them carried goods, passengers, and, inevitably, infected rodents and fleas.

The Rhône-Saône corridor was one of the most important routes for the plague’s spread through France. From Marseille, the disease moved up the Rhône to Avignon, Lyon, and the cities of the interior. The Rhine served a similar function in the German lands, carrying plague from the Low Countries to the cities of the Rhineland and beyond.

The Danube connected the cities of Central Europe to the Black Sea, providing an alternative route for the plague’s spread from east to west. The Volga and the Dnieper connected the Russian principalities to the Black Sea and the Caspian, facilitating the spread of plague through Eastern Europe.

Quarantine at Sea

The recognition that ships were vehicles for plague transmission led to the development of the earliest quarantine measures. The Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) enacted the first known quarantine regulation in 1377, requiring ships arriving from plague-infected areas to spend thirty days (later extended to forty — quaranta in Italian, hence “quarantine”) in isolation before being allowed to enter the port. Venice adopted similar measures in 1423, establishing a permanent quarantine station on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio.

These maritime quarantine measures, while imperfect, represented a significant advance in public health. They acknowledged the connection between shipping and disease transmission and established institutional mechanisms for controlling it. The principles of maritime quarantine would be refined and extended over the following centuries, eventually forming the basis of modern international health regulations.
