Archaeological Evidence of the Black Death

The physical traces of the Black Death — mass graves, plague cemeteries, skeletal remains, and the material culture of the pandemic — provide essential evidence for understanding the disease’s impact. In recent decades, archaeological excavations of plague cemeteries across Europe have transformed our understanding of the pandemic, providing data that complement and sometimes challenge the written primary sources.

The Plague Cemeteries

The most significant archaeological evidence for the Black Death comes from the plague cemeteries that were established to accommodate the overwhelming number of dead. These cemeteries, created hastily outside city walls when existing churchyards overflowed, contain thousands of bodies buried in mass graves — long trenches in which corpses were stacked in layers, separated by thin deposits of soil.

The most extensively excavated plague cemetery is at East Smithfield in London, established in 1348–1349 near the Tower of London under the authority of King Edward III, on land provided by Ralph Stratford, Bishop of London, specifically for plague victims. (Sir Walter Manny founded a second emergency cemetery nearby at West Smithfield, later the site of the London Charterhouse.) Excavations in 1986–88 recovered more than 600 skeletons, buried in orderly trenches. The careful arrangement of the bodies — laid supine, with arms at their sides or crossed over the chest — suggests that even in the midst of catastrophe, some attempt was made to treat the dead with dignity.

Another major plague cemetery was established at Spitalfields, north of the City of London, where excavations have revealed similar evidence of mass burial. Smaller plague cemeteries have been identified at sites across England, France, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia.

Skeletal Analysis

The skeletal remains from plague cemeteries have been subjected to extensive scientific analysis. Osteological examination can reveal the age, sex, and general health of the deceased, providing information about the demographic profile of plague victims that is not available from written sources.

Analysis of the East Smithfield skeletons has revealed several important findings. First, the age distribution of the dead suggests that the plague did not kill indiscriminately. Individuals who showed skeletal markers of stress — evidence of malnutrition, chronic disease, or other health problems — were more likely to die than those who were in good health. This finding supports the hypothesis that the Black Death was a “selective” killer, disproportionately affecting those whose immune systems were already compromised.

Second, the sex ratio of the dead was approximately equal, suggesting that men and women were equally likely to die of plague. This finding contradicts some contemporary sources that suggested a sex bias in mortality.

Third, the age distribution included a significant proportion of children and young adults, consistent with the pattern expected from an epidemic disease that struck all age groups.

DNA Analysis

The most significant advance in the archaeological study of the Black Death has been the application of DNA analysis to ancient skeletal remains. In 2011, a team led by Kirsten Bos and Johannes Krause successfully recovered and sequenced the complete genome of Yersinia pestis from teeth recovered from the East Smithfield cemetery. This landmark achievement confirmed beyond doubt that Y. pestis was the pathogen responsible for the Black Death and provided the first complete genetic portrait of the medieval strain.

Subsequent studies have recovered additional plague genomes from cemeteries across Europe, providing a more detailed picture of the bacterium’s diversity during the pandemic. A 2022 study recovered Y. pestis DNA from teeth buried in cemeteries near Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, dated to 1338–1339, providing the earliest known evidence of the specific lineage that would cause the Black Death.

The Material Culture of the Plague

Archaeological evidence for the Black Death extends beyond skeletal remains to include the material culture of the pandemic. Mass graves, plague pits, and emergency cemeteries are the most visible traces, but other evidence includes the abandonment of settlements (deserted medieval villages), the disruption of building projects, and the proliferation of chantry chapels and funerary monuments in the post-plague period.

The analysis of pottery, coins, and other datable artefacts from plague contexts can provide chronological information that helps to establish the timing and duration of individual outbreaks. The study of settlement patterns — the abandonment of villages, the contraction of cultivated land, the shift from arable to pastoral agriculture — provides evidence for the economic transformations that followed the pandemic.

The Limitations of Archaeological Evidence

Archaeological evidence has limitations as well as strengths. Plague cemeteries are not evenly distributed: they are concentrated in urban areas and in regions where archaeological investigation has been most intensive. Rural plague burials, which may have been less formal and less likely to be preserved, are underrepresented in the archaeological record.

Moreover, the identification of plague burials is not always straightforward. Mass graves can be caused by warfare, famine, or other catastrophes, and the presence of Y. pestis DNA must be confirmed through molecular analysis to establish a definitive diagnosis.
