Competing Theories About the Black Death
The study of the Black Death has been marked by vigorous debate about the pandemic’s cause, its mortality, and its long-term consequences. While the recovery of Yersinia pestis DNA from medieval remains has resolved the most fundamental question — the identity of the pathogen — other debates continue to generate scholarly disagreement.
The Pathogen Debate
For much of the twentieth century, the identification of the Black Death pathogen as Yersinia pestis was accepted without serious challenge. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, several scholars proposed alternative hypotheses. The historian Samuel Cohn argued that the speed and pattern of the Black Death’s spread were inconsistent with flea-borne bubonic plague and concluded that it could not have been Yersinia pestis, though he declined to name a specific alternative pathogen. Separately, Susan Scott and Christopher Duncan, in Biology of Plagues (2001), went further, proposing that the pandemic was a viral haemorrhagic fever caused by an agent similar to Ebola.
These alternative theories gained some popular attention but were never widely accepted by the scholarly community. The recovery of Yersinia pestis DNA from multiple medieval plague cemeteries across Europe — culminating in the reconstruction of the complete Y. pestis genome from the East Smithfield cemetery in London in 2011 — has effectively eliminated the alternative pathogen hypotheses. The molecular evidence is now overwhelming: the Black Death was caused by Y. pestis.
The Mortality Debate
The debate over death tolls remains active. Conservative estimates, associated with Josiah C. Russell, place European mortality at approximately twenty-five to thirty-three percent. Higher estimates, associated with Ole J. Benedictow, argue for mortality of fifty to sixty percent. Most scholars now accept a range of thirty to fifty percent, with significant regional variation.
The debate is complicated by the limitations of the evidence. Medieval sources are uneven in their coverage, and the types of records available — manorial court rolls, tax assessments, ecclesiastical records — each have their own biases. The integration of archaeological evidence and DNA studies has provided new data, but the sample sizes remain small and the results are not always consistent.
The Transmission Debate
The question of how the plague spread so rapidly across Europe has generated significant debate. The traditional explanation — transmission by fleas from infected rats — has been challenged by scholars who note that the speed of the pandemic’s advance exceeds what would be expected from purely rodent-flea transmission. The involvement of pneumonic plague, which spreads directly between humans, is now widely accepted as a contributing factor, but the relative importance of different transmission routes remains debated.
A 2018 study proposed that human ectoparasites — fleas and lice that feed directly on humans — may have played a more significant role than previously recognised. This hypothesis remains controversial and requires further testing.
The Consequences Debate
The debate over the long-term consequences of the Black Death has also generated disagreement. Some historians, following the tradition of earlier scholarship, have emphasised the pandemic’s transformative impact on European society — its role in the decline of feudalism, the emergence of the Renaissance, and the development of public health institutions. Others have argued that many of these changes were already underway before the plague and that the pandemic’s role was to accelerate existing trends rather than to initiate new ones.
